Stationary Count (2 people required)

  1. Go to a dragonfly habitat (Dragonflies are usually found near big bodies of water).

  2. Choose a spot where the counts will be done at the location.

  3. Turn on AirCasting with the app and air beam.

  4. Set timer to 10 minutes.

  5. One person will be the recorder. He or she will get out data sheet and fill out names, date, field number, time, temperature using the thermometer and pointing towards the sky in the sun, humidity and particulate matter (PM) with AirCasting app, location, weather, sky and wind.

  6. The second person will identify the type and quantity of each dragonfly and tell the recorder until the timer stops.

  7. Add the total quantities.

  8. Prepare the nets by attaching the handle to the mouth of the (if not done already).

  9. To catch dragonflies, hold the lower portion of the handle and swing when the dragonfly is near and reachable. Twist the handle in order for the net to hang and for the mouth to be sealed. This will prevent the dragonfly from escaping.

  10. If dragonfly(s) is captured, then place into butterfly cage

  11. Using the scratch paper, record where the dragonfly was captured, initial of all team members, when it was captured, and identification of the dragonfly.

  12. Turn off AirCasting once completed.

Traveling Count (2 people required)

  1. Go to a dragonfly habitat (Dragonflies are usually found near big bodies of water).

  2. Choose a range with a starting point and ending point where the counts will be done at the location.

  3. Turn on AirCasting with the app and air beam.

  4. Set timer to 10 minutes.

  5. Begin walking from the starting point. One person will be the recorder. He or she will get out data sheet and fill out names, date, field number, time, temperature using the thermometer and pointing towards the sky in the sun, humidity and particulate matter (PM) with AirCasting app, location, weather, sky and wind.

  6. The second person will identify the type and quantity of each dragonfly and tell the recorder until the timer stops and the ending point is reached.

  7. Add the total quantities.

  8. Prepare the nets by attaching the handle to the mouth of the (if not done already).
